Find Your Tribe at OTS: A Guide to Meaningful Industry Networking

Taking place this year on 10th – 12th June in Liverpool, OTS brings together some of the most passionate, influential voices in the outdoor industry. It’s not just a trade show – it’s a chance to connect, get inspired, and grow your network in a meaningful way.

And while “networking” can sound a bit cringey, it doesn’t have to be. Done well, it’s simply about building relationships, sharing ideas, and supporting each other’s journeys in the industry. Whether you're a seasoned pro or attending for the first time, here are our go-to tips to make the most of every hello, handshake and coffee queue chat.

Ten Top Tips for Smart, Natural Networking

1. Make authentic contact before the conference

Do your research before you send a message on LinkedIn or drop a short email to say you’re looking forward to seeing someone. Authenticity is key.  Find out what’s their latest news? What’s important to them right now? A little research goes a long way and can help spark conversations.

2. Know who’s going

This is an easy one as the exhibitor list is on the website https://outdoortradeshow.com/exhibitor-list/ so make sure to check it out.  And don’t forget it’s not just exhibitors at the show, there’s a load of outdoor media and influencers there too.  If you’re an exhibitor ask the team at MCS if the team is open to sharing the list of media signed up to the show.

3. Stay flexible but organised

If you're planning to meet someone specific, make sure you store their mobile number in your phone before you go so you can keep in touch on the day. Events move fast, and a quick “just arriving” text makes everything smoother.

4. Yes, business cards still matter

They might feel a bit old-school, but in our opinion they're still the fastest way to share your details - trust us, we’ve tried everything!  Add a note on the back to jog your memory later, and follow up with a message or a LinkedIn connection request afterwards.

5. Bring a wingperson (or find one there)

Everything’s easier with a buddy (or in our case a Springer) – someone to introduce you, hype you up, or just debrief with over a drink. If you're solo, set yourself the challenge to meet someone new you’d happily team up with for your next event.

6. Lead with curiosity

Smile, say hello, and be interested. Ask about them – their role, what they’re working on, what’s exciting them right now. People love to talk about what matters to them – all you have to do is listen.

7. Make your intro count

Keep it light, relevant, and memorable. What’s a quick story, insight or mission that gives people a sense of what you do and why you do it? Think elevator pitch, but warmer and more human and definitely prep it in advance.

8. Get involved

The OTS Sustainability Breakfast is making a welcome return and is your opportunity to really get stuck in.  Be brave and ask something. Others probably want to know the same thing.  If you’re a runner check out the 5K morning run itinerary supported by Topo and Ronhill – how does a 7 am start sound?

9. Dress like you mean it

Definitely don’t go full suit and tie – this says you’re not comfortable or overly familiar with the outdoor industry but do make an effort. Outdoor style can still look polished and professional.

10. Go with a genuine interest in others

Go in with an open mind, a warm smile, and a genuine interest in others – and the rest will take care of itself.

One last thing

Whether you’re looking to connect with media, brands, or likeminded professionals, OTS is the perfect place to start conversations that matter.
